Simonyi, 58, paid around 22 million dollars to spend a fortnight onboard the International Space Station, 380 kilometers above earth, earlier this month. The billionaire Microsoft developer spoke Hungarian while in space, sending the Hungarian media into spasms of ecstasy, and Sólyom thanked Simonyi for using the tongue of his motherland and for „emphasizing his Hungarianness.”
Simonyi, who has been dubbed „the second Hungarian astronaut, „ said that while he was American he always held Hungary in his heart. Hungary’s only other space traveler, Bertalan Farkas, spent a week in space in 1980 on a joint mission with a Soviet cosmonaut.
