The Hungarian, 19, a surprise US Open quarter-finalist earlier this month, won 6-7 (7-9) 7-5 6-2 to claim her second title of her year. The victory means Szávay will gatecrash the top 20 after eliminating the third top 10 opponent of her short career.
She added world No.3 Jankovic to her list of victims, which also includes Daniela Hantuchova, at New Haven in August, and Nadia Petrova, at the US Open. Jankovic, the favorite from Belgrade, rallied from 5-0 down in the first-set tiebreak to win the bracket after saving three set points in 67 minutes. But the determined Szávay was just settling in for what would prove to be a long evening at the Beijing tennis centre, the final lasting 2 hours and 55 minutes.
The Hungarian who announced her presence on the world stage by winning the junior French Open two years ago, made her own miracle recovery from 5-1 down in the second set, denying Jankovic on a match point to hold for 2-5. Two more breaks of the shaky Serb and the outsider was back in the chase, leveling at a set apiece. Szávay took an early 2-0 lead in the third set and then overcame stiff Jankovic defence before claiming the title to add to her crown won on clay in Palermo. (foxsports.com.au)
