Charlie McCreevy, the European Union’s internal market commissioner, wants to act against Finland, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy and Sweden for either restricting advertising for gambling services or banning them altogether, the newspaper said. The commission said the countries allowing their citizens to participate in national lotteries is akin to a monopoly on gambling, as more countries use revenue from lotteries to make up for shortfalls from other public funding, the newspaper said. The countries may face large fines if they’re found to have violated laws governing competition, the paper said.
