China’s Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying requested that the arms embargo on China be lifted and that China be recognized as a market economy, on Thursday at a conference in Budapest, according to Xinhuanet.com. The conference served a platform for discussion between European Union foreign relations officials and Chinese Foreign Ministry representatives.
Fu Ying told reporters that making those decisions is a political question for the EU, “a question of promoting mutual trust”. “If we can get rid of the obstacles, we’ll be able to march forward rapidly,” she said.
Chief Operating Officer of the European External Action Service David O’Sullivan, stated that the disagreement regarding the arms embargo on China is “a known debate,” while also citing the EU’s strict criteria, which need to be met for China to be recognized as a market economy. “There is progress in meeting the criteria,” he added.
