The draft also outlines plans to implement a uniform level of service and better harmonize the work of chambers in different areas. As of 2012, all Hungarian companies are required by law to register with their local chamber of commerce and pay a HUF 5,000 annual registration fee.
MKIK chairman László Parragh said the mandatory registration system should be restructured in a way that does not present an additional burden to businesses and suggested that the registration fee could become the mandatory chamber membership fee. In exchange, all businesses could request the same level of service from the chamber, he added.
MKIK must now decide whether it wants to be a “lazy cat” or a “pouncing tiger”, Parragh said, adding he would opt for the latter. He stressed that local chambers of commerce and industry would still be legally independent in future, but their activities would be better paired with MKIK’s.
