Péter Juhász, a council member of Budapest’s District 5 and member of opposition alliance party Együtt (Together) spearheaded the “Demonstration Against Government Corruption”, which began at Budapest City Hall on Erzsébet tér at 4pm and proceeded along Andrássy út, finishing at the National Bureau of Investigation on Aradi utca.
Juhász said the aim of the demonstration was to raise awareness of rampant corruption within the ruling Fidesz party. Juhász has unsucessfully called for investigations of the questionable sale of one-third of District 5’s properties to “Fidesz cronies” or “individuals with known ties to the criminal underworld” – sales that took place when Antál Rogán, current Fidesz parliamentary faction leader, was mayor of the district. Juhász and other speakers at the demonstration complained that the Prosecutor’s Office refuses to investigate the matter.
They also complained of alleged corruption surrounding the Paks nuclear power plant extension, offshore energy trading entity MET and state control of tobacco distribution are some of the other issues Juhász said he would like to address.
