Kovács said that Hungary will not take responsibility for developments following Germany’s invitation to take in asylum seekers entering the European Union via Hungary last year, according to the news agency.
As per the Dublin regulation, asylum-seekers registered in the EU are sent back to the country from which they entered the EU. Due to the record number of asylum seekers entering the EU last year, Kovács said that the registration system is “dead”, according to the Associated Press.
The spokesperson reportedly told the AP that Hungary did what it could to mitigate a crisis situation and that what Europe saw in 2015 was not a “refugee crisis” but a “mass migration crisis”.
According to the news agency, Hungary approved 502 requests from asylum-seekers in 2015, while 90% of the 177,135 people who registered for asylum left the country prior to their requests being approved.
