The resignation came hours after the announcement that Péter Polt, Hungary's chief prosecutor, sought to lift the parliamentary immunity of Völner, who is also an MP, on suspicion he "regularly and in a business-like manner" accepted bribes from the head of the Hungarian Chamber of Bailiffs.

Völner's counsel said he acknowledges no criminal responsibility and that no crime took place. The politician is cooperating with the investigating authority and is ready to give testimony at any time, the counsel added.

Völner "accepts the political consequences of the matter" and has submitted his resignation from the post of state secretary, the law firm said.
