The new declaration was made at the same time the earlier state of emergency, declared in the spring, ceased as amendments to the constitution came into force from November 1. Those amendments expanded the government's mandate to declare a state of emergency to cases of war or humanitarian catastrophes in neighboring countries.

The Government Information Centre (KTK) told MTI on Friday that the government would propose to lawmakers an extension of the state of emergency.

The state of emergency was declared by the government for a period of 30 days. Lawmakers may extend the state of emergency for up to 180 days.
