According to the police, the Transatlantic Operations Department of the National Bureau of Investigation (KR NNI) received information on Aug. 25 from an FBI unit stationed in Hungary that the wanted British national could be traveling through the country.

U.S. authorities had been investigating the man since 2003 in connection with coercion and inducement of a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity, police.hu said.

The suspect fled the United States in September 2004, allegedly for England. He was charged in the United States that year, and U.S. judicial authorities issued an arrest warrant in November 2004. An international warrant followed in 2006, while the Washington Interpol office had also been seeking him since March 2006.

Hungarian investigators identified a vehicle with British registration plates used by the fugitive and established that he had entered Hungary from Romania on Aug. 26.

After locating the vehicle, KR NNI contacted the Hajdú-Bihar County Police Headquarters and informed officers that the suspect was traveling on the M3 motorway from the direction of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County.

Several police units were dispatched, and officers caught up with the vehicle near Polgár, directing it to a rest area.

The driver was identified as the wanted 60-year-old man and was immediately arrested. He was taken to the Hajdúnánás Police Department and placed in custody.

The National Criminal Cooperation Center coordinated the necessary international cooperation and assisted in bringing the man before a court. KR NNI requested that the suspect be placed under extradition arrest, but the court ordered his release, police.hu said.
