The accidents involved vehicles with Moldovan license plates.

The press officer of the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Police Headquarters told 24.hu that both the truck that caught fire after colliding with a roadwork vehicle and the minibus in which seven people died had Moldovan plates.

She also said that all eight victims of the two accidents were adult men.

The first accident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. near kilometer marker 114 of the M1 motorway, close to Győr, when a truck collided with a roadwork vehicle. The truck subsequently caught fire, and the driver died at the scene.

Shortly afterward, at around 5:10 a.m., a minibus crashed into a truck that had stopped for traffic reasons due to the earlier accident near kilometer marker 113. Nine people were traveling in the minibus. Seven died at the scene, while two others were injured.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar expressed his condolences on Friday morning.

“On behalf of the government, I express my sincere condolences to the families of the eight foreign nationals who lost their lives in the accident on the M1 motorway at dawn,” Magyar wrote on his Facebook page.

PM Calls Motorway Concession Holder to Account After Fatal Accident

Later on Friday morning, Magyar called for an explanation from a motorway concession holder after the fatal accident, according to a report by news wire MTI.

“In light of the tragic accident this morning and the reports coming in, I am asking for an immediate report on the traffic safety situation caused by the diversions ordered by the motorway concession holder,” Magyar said in a post on Facebook.

MKIF, the concession holder for the upkeep of the motorway, said Magyar Közút Nonprofit, as the party responsible for monitoring its work, would compile the report requested by the prime minister.

MKIF noted that the accidents had not taken place on a section of the M1 which is being expanded, but on a stretch undergoing renovation. Lane shifts are being used on the section between the 113 and 117 kilometer markers, and signs warning motorists of the change are posted 1,500 m, 1,000 m, 500 m and 100 m ahead, it added.
