The measure, which applies to households using gas, electricity, or district heating, is expected to save households around HUF 50 billion.
Gulyás said the discount will be funded partly by the state and partly through revenue from the Robin Hood tax on energy firms. The government had announced a week earlier its plan to shoulder the cost of increased heating amid the cold snap.
Minister of Energy Affairs Csaba Lantos said households using multiple energy sources would only be eligible for the discount on one. He noted that around 2.9 million households heat with gas and 674,000 use district heating.
Lantos explained that gas-heated households will receive the discount automatically, while in multi-dwelling buildings with district heating, the discount will be applied at the building level. Households wishing to claim the discount on their electricity bill must submit a declaration by April 30.
The measure is also intended to ensure that increased energy use for heating does not push households over the threshold for the regulated utility pricing scheme.
