Bence Gerlaki, the state secretary for consumer protection and commerce, said the new authority had produced the most visible results in the area of food safety, but had also addressed commerce and consumer protection issues, meeting the highest international standards, he added.
NKFH conducted food safety probes of over 6,000 products in the first half of the year and levied around HUF 210 million in fines for violations, he said.
NKFH is also scrutinising retailers for compliance with a mandatory cap on markups and data provision for an online price comparison platform, he added.
Around 1,400 probes were conducted for compliance with the markups measure, among over 7,100 consumer protection probes, he said.
Fines for consumer protection violations were close to HUF 1.2 billion, he added. Gerlaki said the watchdog was following inflation trends closely and aimed to cooperate with the government on achieving the inflation target.
Oversight of food vouchers pensioners are set to get will be another priority task of the authority, he added.
