With the installation of 4,290 additional panels, the company now operates a total of 13,662 solar panels across its sites in the city.
The expanded system has a total capacity of 6,432 kWp and is expected to generate more than 8.2 GWh of renewable electricity annually—equivalent to the consumption of approximately 1,490 households. According to Schaeffler, the system will reduce the company’s carbon dioxide emissions by over 1,443 tons per year.
The Szombathely facility is now home to the largest on-site solar power plant within the Schaeffler Group. The new installation adds to the 1,372 panels commissioned in 2021 at the E-mobility plant on Söptei Road and the 8,000 panels installed at the site in 2023.
At the official launch of the upgraded system, Tibor Szigeti, CEO of Schaeffler’s Hungarian operations and managing director of Schaeffler Savaria Kft., said: “I thank my colleagues and partners for the dedicated work they put into developing the solar park. The use of renewable energy affects our climate classification, serves the interests of our community, and improves the global climate. We are proud of our innovative investments.”
Ferenc Molnár, head of the plant, added: “With this project—excellent from both an economic and technical perspective—we are increasing our competitiveness and workplace safety. Being the first to achieve this within the group makes us very proud.”
To mark the occasion, instructors and students from the company’s training center designed a custom installation for the ceremony. The event concluded with a reception attended by company executives, employees, and representatives of the partner company involved in the solar park’s construction.
The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, and the Szombathely plant is contributing to that target with concrete actions. Since 2020, the facility has sourced all of its electricity from renewable energy, and it continues to implement environmentally focused improvements across production processes, operations, and its broader value chain.
Schaeffler Savaria’s efforts have been recognized with three CSR Hungary Awards (in 2023 and 2024).
