The natural population decrease slightly widened during the period.
A total of 6,196 children were born in November, reflecting an 8.4% decline, or 569 fewer births, compared to November 2023. Deaths also decreased, with 10,267 recorded during the month, 4.7% lower than the previous year, equivalent to 503 fewer deaths. The natural population decrease for the month reached 4,071, slightly higher than the 4,005 recorded in November 2023. Marriages also saw a notable decline, with 2,724 couples tying the knot, a 12% decrease, or 382 fewer marriages, year-on-year.
From January through November 2024, 71,094 children were born, representing a 9.6% drop, or 7,522 fewer births, compared to the same period in 2023. Births declined across all quarters, with the sharpest drop of 14% occurring during the summer months of June through August. The total fertility rate also fell to 1.38 children per female, down from 1.52 the previous year.
The total number of deaths over the first 11 months of 2024 stood at 115,176, a slight decline of 0.3%, or 341 fewer deaths, compared to the same period in 2023. Deaths fluctuated throughout the year, with increases of 7.9% during the third quarter of July through September but declines of 5.7% from March to June and 4.7% in November.
The natural population decrease for January through November was 44,082, an increase of 19% compared to the 36,901 recorded during the same period in 2023. Meanwhile, 44,550 couples married during the first 11 months of the year, a 6.2% decrease, or 2,923 fewer marriages, compared to 2023. Marriage trends varied, with notable increases of 27% in January and February, followed by declines of 14% in June and July and 18% from September through November.
Population metrics for the January–November period showed a birth rate of 8.1 live births per thousand population, a decline of 0.8 per mille points from the previous year. The death rate held steady at 13.1 per thousand population, while the natural decrease rate rose to 5.0 per mille, an increase of 0.8 per mille points year-on-year. Infant mortality increased to 3.8 per thousand live births, up by 0.8 per mille points, while the marriage rate fell to 5.1 per mille, down by 0.3 per mille points compared to 2023.
