Workers from non-EU countries are set to enjoy the same rights regarding working conditions as EU citizens, under the proposed “single permit” directive passed by the European Parliament on Thursday.
The “single permit” directive, that was amended by the Parliament by 311 ayes, 216 nays and 81 abstentions, aims to cut red tape and simplify procedures for immigrants applying to live and work in EU member states.
However, member states will still have the power to decide whether to admit immigrants and can also limit the volume of such workforce.
The new rules will not apply to long-term residents and refugees, who are already covered by other EU rules, seasonal workers, and employees of multinational firms coming to work in their company’s EU offices.
The recent amendments are yet to be presented to the interior and justice ministers of EU member states. The UK, Ireland and Denmark have opted out of the directive.
