Reports: MEP would scare refugees with pigs’ heads
György Schöpflin, an MEP in Hungary’s governing Fidesz party, suggested in his twitter account that pigs’ heads should be hung on the country’s border fence in the south to scare away Muslim refugees, according to reports.
Hungarian online daily 444.hu posted a screen capture of Schöpflin’s tweet, re-tweeted by Brussels-based European Media Director Andrew Stroehlein, who said: “Last night, a member of the European Parliament suggested putting pig’s heads on Hungaryʼs border fence to scare refugees”.
The screen capture of Schöpflin’s tweet is apparently in answer to someone else’s and reads: “Might do so. Human images are haram (forbidden). But agree, pigs’ heads would deter more effectively.” Schöpflin’s tweet no longer appears on his Twitter wall.
Stroehlein reacted to the tweet saying: “Your words are disgusting. I would expect them from anonymous neo-Nazi trolls but you’re an MEP. Act like one,” according to a report in the Independent. Schopflin responded that criticisms of him were “beginning to resemble hate speech” and that he refused to apologize, the Independent report said.
