Orbán: Hungary to increase defense budget to protect region

Following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Budapest yesterday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told the press that Hungary plans to increase its defense budget to protect the country from two key crisis zones, government news portal kormany.hu reported yesterday.

During a press conference held after the meeting, the Prime Minister said the government has long-term plans in place to increase Hungary’s defense expenditure to 2% of GDP, according to kormany.hu. Orbán mentioned the conflict in Ukraine and the “migrant” situation south of the country as issues which could pose a threat to the countryʼs security.
The Prime Minister told Soltenberg that Hungary’s involvement in the Baltic air-policing mission was a success and that Hungary would continue to carry out its obligations in Afghanistan in 2016, kormany.hu reported. Stoltenberg said he was pleased with Hungary’s decision to increase its defense budget and that it would benefit NATO as a whole, adding that the terrorist attacks in Paris were not only directed at innocent people, but at free and democratic societies, and that these must be defended, kormany.hu added.
