Hungarian state-owned all-news channel M1 yesterday updated the online description of a video recording of a Dutch woman being sexually assaulted in Cairo’s Tahrir Square in 2013, after originally labelling the video as showing “dozens of migrants” raping a woman in Cologne, Germany, on New Year’s Eve, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported today.
The updated article posted on hirado.hu, the web site of state news station M1, explains that the video, which was mislabelled and aired on M1 TV on Tuesday, was meant to show similarities between the two events, origo.hu reported. M1 reportedly claimed the video was uploaded to video sharing site YouTube on January 7. The same video was also uploaded to various sites by a number of different users and appears to have been taken during a demonstration in 2013 at Tahrir Square in Cairo. M1 added that “according to witnesses, the methods used were the same at both the locations”, origo.hu reported.
According to origo.hu, the video was used erroneously by Germany daily Die Welt and also by Germanyʼs Pro NRW party based on M1ʼs original claim that the video showed Cologne earlier this month.
The online daily added that the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) is considering investigating the issue.
