OMV Installs Used Cooking Oil Collection Points at 40 Stations

Oil, gas, and petrochemical company OMV has installed used cooking oil collection points at some 40 of its refueling stations in Hungary, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.
At the collection points, people can safely deposit their used cooking oil in leak-proof containers, preferably in the most suitable screw-top PET bottles. Containers can be used for butter, lard, margarine, used cooking oil, spoiled cooking oil, and cooking fat. The containers can be used around the clock and are collected and replenished by OMV's partner H-Bio, which specializes in the collection and treatment of used cooking oil.
After collection, the waste will be sent to a biodiesel production plant after appropriate purification processes. During the treatment process, the cooking oil is mixed with methanol, which results in the glycerol in the oil being separated, while the methanol is bound to the fatty acids in the oil. The end product of the process is already suitable for blending and is used in diesel production, thus reducing the carbon footprint of the fuel.
"OMV intends to place a strong emphasis on circular economy solutions in the future, which it will do to address the challenges of climate change," said Tibor Balogh, managing director of OMV Hungária. "We are pleased that thanks to the collection containers placed at our refueling stations, we can take another step towards protecting our environment."
In addition to the 40 containers installed at the end of last year, OMV is continuously expanding its Hungarian network with additional collection containers after evaluating the experience and demand. The location of the containers is available here.
