‘Son of Saul’ shortlisted for Oscars
Hungarian director László Nemes’ “Son of Saul” has made it to the list of nine films selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, five of which will become nominees in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards in February, news portal index.hu reported this morning.
The film, which addresses the horrors of Auschwitz through a micro-narrative, is the first feature from the Hungarian director and was the winner of the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival this year. “Son of Saul” has also been nominated for a Golden Globe award. These awards will be held in January.
A former assistant to renowned Hungarian director Béla Tarr, Nemes studied film in New York and wrote and directed three award-winning shorts including “With a Little Patience” and “The Counterpart” prior to writing and directing his latest award-winning film.
Two Hungarian films have won Oscars to date including: “The Fly” directed by Ferenc Rófusz (1981) and “Mephisto” directed by István Szabó (1982).
