press release

The overall passenger numbers of Hungary’s low-fare airline Wizz Air were up 22% last year in year-on-year terms, reaching 19.2 million compared to the preceding year’s 15.8 million, the carrier said in a press statement yesterday.

The number of Hungarian passengers was up 12% in year-on-year terms last year, the press release noted.

Along with the growing number of passengers, Wizz Air was busy last year expanding and improving its services. The company inked a cooperation agreement with Hungary’s air traffic controller HungaroControl to set up education and training programs, opened its second base in Hungary in the city of Debrecen with an initial deployment of an Airbus 320 aircraft at Debrecen International Airport, extended its maintenance contract with German Lufthansa Technik Maintenance International (LTMI) and Lufthansa Technik Budapest (LTB), and began expanding and renewing its fleet.

“Wizz Air is intrinsically Hungary’s national carrier and in 2015 we were able to show our commitment with our investments in Budapest and Debrecen”, CEO József Váradi said, also noting that Wizz Air’s chief attractiveness is due to its low prices and the option to purchase extra services as needed for an additional fee.
