Hungary has narrowed the number of candidates for a single spot on the International Space Station (ISS) to four, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a post on Facebook on Saturday.

Around 240 valid applications were submitted in the recruitment drive for the Hunor (Hungarian to Orbit) program by the deadline a little more than a year ago.

The search for an astronaut to travel to ISS began back in 2021. Back then, Bertalan Farkas, Hungary's first man in space, said applicants should be prepared to spend a month, but even as long as a quarter year, on the mission.

The astronaut is selected based on physical, psychological, and professional criteria, in line with the Astronaut Policy of the European Space Agency (ESA).

Hungary's next astronaut will travel to the ISS, with the cooperation of U.S.-based Axiom Space, for a 30-day research mission at the end of 2024 or early in 2025, Szijjártó said.
