Arable land used for organic farming rose 45% in 2019

The area of arable land in Hungary used for organic farming rose 45% to 303,190 hectares in 2019, according to the latest data compiled by EU statistical agency Eurostat.

The share of that area within all farmland utilized in Hungary rose to 5.71% from 3.92% in 2018. The share has more than doubled over a period of five years. Hungary's organic farmland ratio was still under the 8.49% rate for the European Union as a whole, however.

Among Hungary's Visegrád Four peers, the comparable ratios stood at 15.19% in the Czech Republic, 3.49% in Poland and 10.31% in Slovakia. In neighboring Austria, the organic farmland ratio reached 25.33%, the highest rate in the EU.
