2023 Record Year for Hungarian Tourism Sector

Tourism

The performance of Hungary's tourism sector last year beat that in 2022 and matched or exceeded the record year of 2019, before the pandemic, Hungarian Tourism Agency head Zoltán Guller said on Thursday, assessing preliminary data from 2023.

Close to 16 million tourists spent over 41m guest nights in Hungary last year, Guller said. The number of guest nights climbed by 1.3 million from 2022, even though international conflicts cut the number by an estimated 1 million, he added.

Revenue of tourism accommodations and catering establishments rose in the double digits, beating the rate of inflation, he said.

The number of foreign visitors to Hungary rose 18% to 7.1 million, he said, adding that the number of guest nights spent by foreign tourists in the capital had climbed 19% to 11.7 million.

Revenue of tourism accommodations rose 23% to HUF 860 bln last year, while turnover of catering establishments increased 18% to HUF 1.78 tln, the preliminary data show.

Guller said the tourism sector was expected to continue on a sustainable growth path this year.

László Könnyid, the agency's CEO, said the number of guest nights could reach 43 million this year.

By 2030, the agency targets an annual 20 million guests and 50 million guest nights, while the tourism sector's contribution to GDP reaches at least 16%.
