Gov’t ready with answer to Commission on infringement procedures

Hungary's government has written a letter to the European Commission addressing infringement procedures launched a month earlier and will send it on Friday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in an interview on public radio early Thursday. Orbán said Hungary's stand on the matter was defensible, but added that some points needed to be expanded. "We have what could be called a relatively simple series of negotiations ahead of us," he said. Orbán said Hungary would submit to Parliament any necessary amendments to legislation after receiving the Commission's reply. The three accelerated infringement proceedings against Hungary by the Commission concern the country's new Central Bank Act, the mandatory retirement age for judges and the data protection authority. Friday is the deadline for Hungary to respond to Brussels in the procedures.
