Report: Lack of jobs in small Hungarian towns boosts commuting

Mimicking the situation in villages, small towns now also suffer from a permanent lack of available jobs, so that more and more residents are being forced to commute for work, the online version of Világgazdaság reported yesterday.

According to census data, about 1.3 million Hungarians are commuting to work on a daily basis. More than 220,000 people commute for work to Budapest every day and the average daily trip to Budapest is around 30 kilometers, Világgazdaság reported.

This number is likely to have increased since the last census in 2011, the report said. The reason given for the commuting is that businesses are concentrated in Budapest and major cities.

The number of businesses headquartered in Budapest is more than 100 per 1,000 people, and the figure is around 80 per 1,000 residents in other major cities, Világgazdaság reported. Some 37% of Hungarians commute from villages to cities and only 7% do it the other way around the news portal added.
