Serbia thanks Hungary on EU ascension support
After meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Foreign Affairs Minister János Martonyi, Serbia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Mrkic expressed his gratitude to Orbán and his government’s support for Serbian EU membership aspirations.
“We are fully aware how many times lately Hungary has supported Serbia’s EU pathway and we are very grateful for that,” Mrkic told Serbia-based media. “We believe that the voice of our neighbors is particularly important when Serbia is discussed in Brussels.”
Hungary’s Foreign Affairs Minister János Martonyi stated earlier in the week that his government is in favor of EU accession for Serbia as soon as possible.
Of course, Serbia’s sitting government has something of a pressing problem back home, with the deputy prime minister warning of imminent bankruptcy; yesterday, austerity measures to avoid such were adopted, including cuts in state employee pay of up to 25%. The measures come in response to the freezing of a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Serbia’s economy is mired in recession, having contracted by 1.7% last year, and the unemployment rate stands at 24%. The public debt is higher than 60% of gross domestic product.
