Holiday home prices rising fast
Lake Balaton continues to lead in terms of the most expensive waterfront holiday homes in Hungary, with an average price per square meter above HUF 270,000 in 2017, a recent study shows.
According to prices compiled by Takarék Index and cited by business news portal vg.hu, the most expensive cities at Lake Balaton are Siófok on the southern shore and Balatonfüred on the northern shore of the lake. Here average prices were between HUF 344,000 and HUF 368,000 per sqm last year.
But this is not the most expensive area for holiday homes, the survey found. In leisure sites around Budapest, average prices per sqm amounted to HUF 420,000, 70% higher than in 2013.
The second most expensive areas are in western Hungary, in Sopron and Kőszeghegyalja, at HUF 270,000, 63% higher than in 2011. The high prices here are due to their close proximity to Austria. Lake Velence, not far from Budapest, is also an expensive area, with average prices above HUF 270,000 per sqm for holiday homes.
Third ranked for holiday homes is the Lake Balaton area, with an average of HUF 257,000 per sqm. The cheapest area is around Lake Tisza, in eastern Hungary, with prices as low as HUF 50,000 per sqm.
