Visegrád Four diplomats in Ukraine today

Interview

Diplomats from the Visegrád Four nations (Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia) will be in Ukraine today to assess that country’s current situation in meetings with acting president Oleksandr Tuchvynov, beleaguered prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and former PM/just-released political prisoner Yulia Tymoshenko, the last of whom is urging continuance of the uprising.

Included among the Hungarian representation will be Foreign Affairs Minister János Martonyi, who yesterday stated that the V4 diplomatic party hopes to “assist in the country’s democratization” and emphasized that “It is essential that there is no more violence in the Crimea...”

Upon announcing the meeting, Czech Republic Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek said that “The situation [in Ukraine] is very dangerous and it is necessary to prevent its escalation at any cost.”

Also on hand at the talks will be European Union Foreign Policy Director Catherine Ashton.
