Varga, EC VP discuss recommendations for Hungary
National Economy Minister Mihály Varga discussed recommendations the European Commission made to Hungary in May at a meeting with EC vice president Valdis Dombrovskis in Budapest yesterday, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
Varga said after the talks that Hungaryʼs fostered work program was a matter of debate between the government and the EC. Hungary considers the program is a success, with 13% of participants returning to the work force, he added.
The views of the government and the EC also diverge on the matter of taxation: the government does not wish to change its flat-rate, proportional tax system, since it contributes to economic growth and the expansion of employment, he said.
Some of the concerns between the government and the EC have to do with the economic growth outlook for Hungary: the government projects a 3.1% GDP growth for this year, while the EC has forecast 2.8%, he added.
