Varga chairs first Economic Cabinet meeting
The Hungarian government’s newly formed Economic Cabinet, in charge of making decisions related to economic policy, held its first meeting yesterday, according to reports. The meeting was chaired by Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga, who is in charge of the cabinet.
The participants discussed economic and employment trends, the introduction of electronic invoicing, and providing replacement buses for Budapestʼs M3 metro line while it undergoes renovation, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
Under the new division of the Hungarian cabinet into two entities, Prime Minister’s Office chief János Lázár was selected to head the strategic cabinet and Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga heads the economic cabinet, according to decisions published in the official gazette Magyar Közlöny in July.
According to a political analyst quoted in the report, the reason for the division of powers is to allow Prime Minister Viktor Orbán more freedom to concentrate on campaigning for the next election, expected in early 2018, and to handle other issues that he deems important.
