Donald J. Trump “has made it clear” that he appreciates Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told Hungarian daily Világgazdaság, the PM saying he has had a telephone conversation with the U.S. President-elect.

“I am somewhat more informed [about Hungary’s relationship with the United States] than news reports suggest,” Orbán told the Hungarian paper. “I have had a telephone conversation with the new American President [elect], and I can state that our position has improved a lot,” the Hungarian leader said.

“I sensed that he knows that Hungary is a courageous and freedom fighting nation, which has gained outstanding economic results in the past six years,” the Hungarian paper quoted Orbán as saying.

The Hungarian leader remarked that he has received an invitation to Washington from Trump. “I told him I have not been there [Washington] for a long time, as I had been seen as a ‘black sheep’. He laughed and answered that he was regarded as one too.”

The Hungarian leader said he believes Trump will be a President of America who “is not limited in ideology, which means he is an open man, and he is more interested in success, efficiency and results than in political theories.” Orbán said he believes that approach could be of benefit to Hungary as “facts our on our side”. He added that economic cooperation has been good between the two countries, “only ideologies meant obstacles”.
