Tax authority investigates Hungarians mentioned in Panama Papers

Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV), with the assistance of experts in the field, have initiated an investigation of Hungarian citizens and companies referred to in the Panama Papers Leak, the National Economy Ministry said on Friday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
On the request of Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, National Economy Minister Mihály Varga directed NAV to immediately launch investigations related to possible ties, MTI reported.
The authority is committed to using every means necessary to systematically examine potential cases of tax evasion involving private individuals or companies, MTI added.
Orbán said early Friday morning during his fortnightly interview with state-owned Kossuth radio that Hungarian politicians are not likely involved in the Panama Papers offshore scandal and he assumes tracks lead to bankers. He said that even questioning whether Hungarian ministers could be involved in the Panama Paper scandal is “nonsense”. Orbán said he would assign Hungarian authorities “serious tasks” in the coming weeks to assist in an investigation of the names mentioned in the leak.
