The European Union is currently “unprotected” as tens of thousands of “migrants” continue to arrive in the EU “uncontrollably”, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said today in an interview with commercial channel TV2’s morning show Mokka, Hungarian online daily index.hu reported.

The Schengen Zone relies on a lack of border controls inside the zone, with secured external borders, but the external borders have been “kicked over” lately, and Greece is “unable to defend its borders”, the minister said.

“It is obviously complex and different, but not impossible, to defend thousands of kilometers of a border near the sea. If this does not happen, the EU’s western border can easily become Greece’s northern border,” Szijjártó said according to index.hu.

Regarding the quota system, which is being challenged by Hungary at the European Court of Justice, the minister said that “Hungary is not required to keep to the quota system as it was clearly established without considering European regulations”, index.hu reported.

Another issue with the quota system, according to Szijjártó, is that it is unknown how many people would be sent to Hungary under the plan. The minister said that numbers to be sent to Hungary could equal the population of the city of Szeged, index.hu reported.
