Szijjártó: Britain should remain in the EU

History

Britain should vote to remain in the European Union, Hungaryʼs Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said yesterday at a meeting in Luxembourg, according to reports.

A ‘Leave’ decision, which would result in Britain exiting the EU would have an “extreme impact” on the Union, Szijjártó said, adding that Britain was the world’s fifth largest economy and the second largest in Europe.

Szijjártó stressed that without Britainʼs support of the EU, “dialogue could take the wrong turn for Hungary”. The United Kingdom and Hungary have both spoken about the importance of national parliaments having greater autonomy within the EU, and Szjjártó mentioned that recent emergencies have shown that “the ability to make important decisions quickly remains at a national level”.

Concerns for Hungary in the event of a ‘Leave’ vote by Great Britain continue to grow. The Hungarian government placed advertisements in the British press yesterday encouraging British citizens to vote to remain in the EU.

National Economy Minister Mihály Varga predicted on June 13 that a Brexit could slow the rate of Hungaryʼs GDP growth by 0.3-0.4 of a percentage point.

The referendum on whether Great Britain will leave the EU will take place on Thursday.
