State to take over public transport on outskirts of Budapest

Interview

The state will take over the management of public transport in the agglomeration area of Budapest from the municipal council of Budapest, Cabinet Chief János Lázár said at his regular press conference yesterday, state news agency MTI reported. The city would retain control of the transport within the capital.

The National Development Minister and the National Economy Minister have been tasked with preparing a briefing on the financial demands of the planned changes for the state, Lázár said.

The state will run the suburban railway system HÉV, and will get assistance from long-distance bus company Volán and national railways MÁV in the move, he added.

The government will not provide extra funds to the capital to finance its public transport company BKV, as its funding is already covered by law, he said. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Budapest Mayor István Tarlós held talks in December and January on the financing of Budapest’s transportation system. Tarlós was reportedly unhappy with the results of negotiations.
