Socialist campaigners note Hungary's poverty
Given that four million people live in poverty, there are no strong municipalities in Hungary, the leader of the opposition Socialist party, József Tóbiás, said on the campaign trail on Saturday.
There are 620,000 children living in Hungary in derelict houses, 170,000 lack access to clean water, and 300,000 do not receive proper meals, Tóbiás said, referring to an international study on Hungarian society released on Friday.
As he campaigned for Sunday's municipal elections around the country, Tóbiás noted that municipalities are responsible for managing social tension generated by the government’s decisions.
Ildikó Borbély Bangó, a lawmaker for the Socialists, told a press conference on Saturday that the party demands that the Central Statistical Office (KSH) release the figures on poverty in Hungary to the public. She also noted that the EU’s statistical office, Eurosat, has already reported, on the basis of data received from KSH, that the number of people living in poverty in Hungary had increased by an annual 100,000 in 2013, while poverty dropped in all of the neighboring countries.
