Hungary is closing the border crossing of Röszke-Horgos at the Serbian border for 30 days, starting from today, under an order from Minister of Interior Sándor Pintér, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

The reason given for the closure is a need to protect public security, MTI reported. The temporary closure of the border concerns the Röszke-Horgos motorway border crossing and the Röszke-Horgos road border crossing, MTI added.

Since stricter border laws took effect on Tuesday, the border has been closed to refugees, and climbing past the border fence is considered a crime, resulting in legal proceedings. The majority of the refugees previously waiting at the Serbian-Hungarian border recently started journeying towards Croatia, bypassing Hungary, news reports suggest.

Producing journalism that is worthy of the name is a costly business. For 27 years, the publishers, editors and reporters of the Budapest Business Journal have striven to bring you business news that works, information that you can trust, that is factual, accurate and presented without fear or favor.

We would like to offer that same opportunity to our readers. We would like to invite you to help us deliver the quality business journalism you require. Hit our Support the BBJ button and you can choose the how much and how often you send us your contributions.
