Romanians will need passport to enter Hungary

The Romanian Interior Ministry denied that Romanian citizens could travel to Hungary without a passport using only their identity card from next January, the Bucharest-based Hungarian-language newspaper Új Magyar Szó reported on Wednesday.

The paper was referring to reports that the Hungarian and Romanian governments had agreed at their joint session in Budapest last Thursday to allow Romanian citizens to enter Hungary by presenting their ID cards only as of January 1 next year, when Romania joins the European Union.

The Interior Ministry had no information about such an agreement, the paper said, and added that the ministry said Romanian nationals would still need a passport to travel to Hungary after January, since their IDs do not contain the safety features compliant with EU regulations.
