Report: Tax chief wanted to leave when U.S. scandal surfaced
Ildikó Vida, head the National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV), offered to resign from her position last year when she admitted she was on the list of six Hungarian officials who were banned entry to the United States, but Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán did not allow her resign, András Giró-Szász, secretary for governmental communication, told Hungarian news agency MTI.
Last year Vida said she was one of the six officials who had been banned entry to the United States on suspicion of corruption, but she denied any wrong-doing.
According to Giró-Szász, Vida handed in her resignation, again, two months ago, but Orbán told her that he could not accept it based on professional reasons, but only for family-related reasons. National Economy Minister Mihály Varga praised Vida’s work at NAV on Monday when he officially announced her resignation.
Varga said that Vida’s resignation was not in any way connected with the U.S. entry scandal, though the minister had said earlier that the scandals involving top officials’ banned entry to the United States last year, and the way the issue was handled, has weakened the leadership of the country’s National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV), and the body may require management changes.
