Report: First refugee tried, expelled from Hungary
The first refugee who was caught yesterday during an “illegal border crossing” was expelled from Hungary for a full year, following an 80-minute trial today, Hungarian online daily Index.hu reported.
During the trial, the university graduate from Bagdad, said that “I respect Hungarian laws,” adding that he did not know that it was a crime to climb through the fence on the Serbian-Hungarian border. He escaped Iraq with one of his siblings, after the other two were killed, Index.hu said.
The refugee reportedly cried several times during the trial. He was helped by an interpreter. Index.hu reported that the judge showed empathy toward him.
The judge said that the man obviously did not leave his country for “economic reasons” and that it is regrettable that his siblings have been killed, however, as masses of people are now crossing the Hungarian border, hard decisions need to be made, Index.hu reported.
The man is now legally obliged to leave the country immediately. In response to questions from reporters at the scene regarding where he was going next, the man said: “I don’t know”.
