Around 150 refugees began a hunger strike yesterday in a field at the Hungary-Serbia border, requesting entry into the European Union, according to a report by Reuters.

Primarily composed of refugees from Afghanistan and Pakistan, the group initially numbered around 300 people and traveled from Belgrade to the border over the weekend, the report continued.

Members of the group said they would refuse to eat until Hungary opens the border, according to the report.

The treatment of refugees by Hungarian authorities at the border with Serbia has received significant criticism from Human Rights Watch and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in recent months.

Hungarians harbor more concerns over perceived security threats and economic repercussions from refugees than residents of any other country surveyed in the European Union, according to a report published by the Pew Research Center earlier in the month.

Producing journalism that is worthy of the name is a costly business. For 27 years, the publishers, editors and reporters of the Budapest Business Journal have striven to bring you business news that works, information that you can trust, that is factual, accurate and presented without fear or favor.

We would like to offer that same opportunity to our readers. We would like to invite you to help us deliver the quality business journalism you require. Hit our Support the BBJ button and you can choose the how much and how often you send us your contributions.
