President touts Qatar LNG to Visegrád Four nations

Energy Trade

Hungary could soon start buying liquefied natural gas (LNG) exported by Qatar, President János Áder said after talks with the Emir of Qatar yesterday. After the talks, which focused on investment opportunities, Áder said that Qatar holds the third-largest natural gas stock in the world, and has built sufficient capacity to export the gas in liquefied form.

Hungary could soon have some of those billions of cubic meters of gas exported, Áder explained, adding that a few kilometers of pipeline and two interconnectors necessary for Middle Eastern supply to be provided to Hungary and the region from the south “if we agree on financial conditions.”

“Standing on several legs” is important for Hungary to make the country independent of Russian gas supplies, stated the president. He argued that Qatar-supplied natural gas could be an alternative opportunity for the Visegrád Four nations (Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia), while those countries, using over 40 billion cubic meters of gas annually, would represent an important market for the exporter.
