Socialists boost support in opinion poll

Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány's Socialist Party narrowed the gap with former premier Viktor Orbán's opposition Fidesz party in a December survey, weekly HVG reported citing the pollster Median. According to the survey, support for the Socialists rose to 32% from 30% of eligible voters, while Fidesz backers fell to 35% from 36%. The junior coalition party Free Democrats remained at 4% in the Median poll, the weekly said.
Gyurcsány took office in September 2004 after predecessor Péter Medgyessy was forced out amid the lowest support for the Socialists in three years. The government faces elections in less than six months.
