Eurosceptic parties on the rise
Apparent apathy and disappointment towards the European Union led to the rise of far-right parties causing “earthquakes” at EU polls and shocked the whole union.
Not just the falling turnout ratio has shocked the European Union, but also the increasing popularity of radical far-right parties. Eurosceptic parties can occupy 140 seats of the 751 seat European assembly.
Anti-EU parties hailed both sides of the British Channel. Far-right National Front (NF) of France has collected 25% of votes securing 24 seats of the country’s available 27.
United Kingdom’s Independent Party (UKIP) bagged 27%. UKIP leader Nigel Farage summarized the elections as "the most extraordinary result in British politics for 100 years". Talking about a political “earthquake” he said they “have hit very hard”.
Hungarian nationalist far-right Jobbik leader Gábor Vona said they had been able to meet their goals by securing the second place following the governing party Fidesz. Following the governing party’s 12 seats, Jobbik gained 3 seats taking over MSzP’s and Democratic Coalition’s (DK) 2 seats, respectively. Együtt-PM’s and green-centered LMP’s will share the last two seats, one by one.
According to Vona, Jobbik has become the second power of the country and the Socialists have collapsed. List leader Krisztina Morvai emphasized that the results are a great success in today’s politically controlled media, secret services and prosecution.
Jobbik leader said that the party could stand rock solid against the “vile attacks” launched by Fidesz and the opposing Socialists. The party still supports its MEP Béla Kovács who had been previously accused of spying for Russia.
Rise of the Eurosceptic parties was accompanied by the continuously falling turnout figures and reached only 43% this year.
