Court dismisses case of NAV against Atlatszo.hu

The Hungarian court has dismissed a defamation lawsuit which the Hungarian tax authority (NAV) brought against investigative journalism portal Atlatszo.hu over 18 months ago, the portal reported on its website yesterday.

Atlatszo.hu sought to expose the corrupt practices of the tax authority, in particular the case of senior NAV official, Katalin Somos who reportedly terminated investigations into a handful of high-profile VAT evasion cases, the portal explained. It was this accusation that resulted in the defamation suit, which was dismissed after it was determined that there were no grounds on which to sue for defamation in a case involving a public debate about a publicly funded institution, Atlatszo.hu reported.

During the final hearing in the case, Somos reportedly said that she had acted within the law and that she felt the best course of action was to terminate the investigations, Atlatszo.hu added.
