Constitutional Court says appeals against "crisis taxes" outside of its jurisdiction

Issues

Hungary's Constitutional Court on Tuesday said it rejected appeals against "crisis taxes" on certain business sectors without a thorough review because it lacked jurisdiction.

The Constitution and the law on the Constitutional Court limits its power to review matters of taxes levied by the central government to cases in which the appeal is based on violation of fundamental rights, such as the right to life and to human dignity, freedom of thought or religion. The appeals did not note the violation of such rights, the court said.

The taxes on the retail, telecommunications and energy sectors were introduced last year. They were targeted to generate HUF 161 billion a year in 2010-2012.
