Ambassador to Thailand wins lawsuit on job loss
Hungary's Foreign Ministry lost an appeal on Tuesday in connection with Hungary's former ambassador to Thailand, who was dismissed from his post in January 2005 for being on holiday during the tsunami disaster.
In a final ruling, a Budapest court ruled that JĂ¡nos VĂ¡ndor had rightfully spent his Christmas vacation in Hungary at the time of the crisis and he had received no specific orders from the Foreign Ministry to interrupt his holidays. His claim that traveling to the tsunami-stricken area had been impossible at the time was also upheld.
The court ruled in favor of VĂ¡ndor in the spring of 2006, which was appealed by the ministry. The ministry gave VĂ¡ndor another job within the ministry after recalling him from foreign service. The court ruled that VĂ¡ndor's right to represent Hungary abroad must be restored.
