PM reacts to Obama's speech

History

Hungary's prime minister reacted strongly yesterday to U.S. President Barack Obama's claim that the country is intimidating civil society groups, AP reports.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a statement to the press that Obama’s comments made in a speech in New York on Tuesday were “not based on facts”.

"The Hungarian people are freedom-loving people and would not tolerate any restrictions on their freedom," Orban said.

Speaking at the Clinton Foundation, Obama said that “from Hungary to Egypt, endless regulations and overt intimidation increasingly target civil society”.

From June, Hungarian authorities have investigated about 60 NGOs that are financed from abroad. Orban said that some of these NGOs are “paid foreign activists”.

Earlier this month, U.S. representatives at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) expressed their concern that the intimidation of civil society and free media is increasing in Hungary.
